Crimson Tide

Some of you might be freaked out because the movie was released in 1995 but it is worth watching one more time. And if you are studying HR you will love it because it gives an insight into the complex human nature and its behavior under different circumstances. Crimson Tide is not exactly the Oscar stuff because they like crying faces. But if you are looking for a nail biting thriller go watch it.

The setup is the Cold War between America and Russia. The States has launched its nuclear missile armed submarines in the Pacific ocean to attack Russia in case of war. The captain of one of the submarines (Gene Hackman--GH) is arrogant, aggresive, dominant and a 'hardass' as one of his crewmembers describes him. Now GH has his opinions in black and white and is averse to suggestions. On the other hand you have the vice-captain (Denzel Washington-- DZ) who is more empathetic and takes his time to arrive at a decision. It is this difference of opinion that creates a tension 2000ft below the sea. In times of war one wrong decision can destroy nations. The ensuing tension between the captian and the vice-captain affects the entire crew. The movie gradually grows on you and you can feel your heart thumping. You bite your nails and want to punch something (but don't punch your freind sitting next to you), you want to be a part of the action.

Go watch it if your are a fan of DZ and GH. It is one of their best performances-- just mind blowing. Go watch it for its crisp editing and direction (Tony Scott and his brother Ridley Scott is known for his thrillers-- 'Gladiator','Enemy of the State'). Everything from the supporting performances (Viggo Mortensen) to the background score is Bang on Target.
