Confused....like never before.

I have been in a confused state a lot of times before but have never been under such a dilemma ever. This time around the matter I am dealing with is going to decide the course of my future.

The campus recruitment in my college has started and my prospects of getting the kind of job I want with the kind of package I am expecting are quite remote. And there is another important thing, I think there is something lacking in me which makes me a not so suitable candidate for the companies.  Aargh!!!!! Doesn’t matter, it’s their loss if they don’t want me.

But as of now there is much bigger pressing problem at my hand and I am completely in two minds.  The problem being, whether I should do a job at all. There are two options available to me. Become a businessman right away of become one a few years later. One part of me wants to work for some time, gain considerable experience of the corporate world, enjoy life (most important) and then when I get bored of the job, become an entrepreneur.  But on the other it’s not all a bad idea to join my father’s business which he wants me to do and become proficient in it. The one or two years I would spend in doing a job could be rather utilized in learning the family business, my dad says. In a way he is correct, but the idea of getting into such a serious thing at an age of 22 years and 287 days seems to be exactly opposing to my view of living life. “Abhi to mere khelne kudne ke din hai”. I think that joining our business would mean a complete turnaround of my life. It would go from enjoying 24 hours to working for at least 9 hours with no enjoyment time at all.

On the other hand joining our business would mean a good solid start for me in the money earning world. Besides, I think I can perform well for my own self than for someone else. But the enjoyment, fun would all be lost, forever, I guess.

I think it’s going to take me a bit more time to make up my mind about what I really want to do and solve this long lived issue. It’s time to find a long term solution to this long term problem.

dillemas of life

dear aniket,

you have beautifully presented one of the dillemas of professional life. actually this is a serious decision whichone has to take immediately after learning all the theories of decision making :)

lets weigh options available to you.

1. start your own business, an entrepreneur

2. joining your dad's business

3. joining some job, campus placement

being an entrepreneur has its own charm. not going into the pros and cons of it, lets find out if you have what they say, "Dream is not what you see in sleep,it is that doesnt let you sleep". do have passion for something for which you ready to sacrifice initial worldly pleasures. and try to find out do you have 'an idea' which you want to carry out profitably. i assume you are in 3rd semester so you have time to develop your idea into a business plan along with financials.

am sure you have been involved in your dad's business in some way or other and must be aware of the ins and outs of it. just ccheck out the future prospects of it. analyse which direction you want to lead it to, in case you have to lead it today. which sector the business is in and who are the other players. you can do some strategic analysis.

going for the campus placement is the easiest option for all of us. as you said, "it’s their loss if they don’t want me". when u say you lack in something, its just your apprehension on going in totally new territory, the maturing process, where there are no second takes. this is where your b-school training helps you in building that confidence and developing faith in yourself.

my take on this situation: if i have that brilliant idea, seed capital and parents support; being entrepreneur is the way :) As last resort, dad's business is there to fall on. Else go for some experience in some company and later join your dad's business.

cheers!

Faith in yourself

Aniket, most folks go through this heart-wrenching uncertainty!

My advice to you: Have faith in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself, who will?

Consider yourself fortunate to have a fallback plan - your father's business which your father painstakingly built. You are practically getting it on a platter. A lot of people don't have this luxury.

At the end of the day, just follow your heart - don't analyse too much!

Good luck!

Seriously Aniket.. Nice blog

Seriously Aniket.. Nice blog dude..

I think you should keep faith in our placement team. They are working their best in getting the companies on campus.

And many would agree to this that you need to have some work ex before joining business.
