Student – Police Internship program is a unique activity at PUMBA carried out with main objective of inculcating the spirit of collaboration between students - especially young citizens and police. Let’s see what some of the participants want to say:
Aditya Awthare shares major highlights of the program
It is very important to create awareness among the masses regarding the functioning of police, the laws that the citizens should abide by and to eliminate misconceptions about police. With this view the Commissioner of Police of Pune city, Mrs. Meeran Borwankar put forth the idea of creating awareness by involving the masses into this program. We as students of PUMBA were the first to witness this novel concept.
28 students from PUMBA participated in the Student – Police internship program. The training program started on 23rd August and ended on 30th August.
The program began with warm welcome by the officials at Chatushrungi police station. On the first day we had an introductory session followed by interaction where in we asked several queries to the officers. They explained us the choky system, different insignias and the posts in Police department.
During the internship we learned how the different penal codes and other formalities police have to follow when a person is arrested. We visited Police choky where we saw the different books of records and observed how cases are handled.
Night Patrolling: It was one of the most valuable experiences that we gained, wherein we had a glimpse of the city in the night through the eyes of law. We covered zone 3 which consists of areas such as Bhosle Nagar, SB road, Baner, Wakad, Hinjewadi etc. During the visit the daily reports of the police stations were checked and also the streets and places of importance were inspected. We visited the jails at few police stations where a count of prisoners was taken and their record was checked. During the whole night information was continuously exchanged between the control room and all patrolling units. We all attended the night patrol with enthusiasm and learned how the city is being safeguarded even at nights.
Road Safety Police: We were briefed about the current traffic situation and how the traffic is managed. We were made aware of various offences and the penalty associated with each offence. We were told about innovative concept called as Project ‘Traffic Cop’ developed by the Pune police. The police were given Blackberry cell phones through which they accessed the information on vehicles registration, license holder’s identity and previous records within no time. We felt proud on learning that the London police had come to Pune and marveled at the system developed by our Pune traffic police. Later we saw the actual working of ‘Traffic Cop’ at the University signal.
I found the training was very helpful as we got acquainted with our Police department and it proved misconceptions we had were false.
Akshay Nipankar talks about his own experience
It was exciting to learn about what are the types of the offences, how the primary investigation is done with live example of kidnappers who were just arrested on that day. Introduction about the arms and ammunition, how and when they are used was definitely my area of interest.
When we went for “BANDOBAST" for Shiv Jayanti marches I came to know how hard it is for policemen to maintain peace and law & order when it comes to religious things. It is possible for them only because of the Shanti groups and Sadbhavana committees present in these areas.
It was really useful to know how the procedure of passport verification is done and why it is needed and how to increase the cooperation to police during this process.
The internship just changed the image of police personnel in our minds and was helpful for us to follow law with more vision and pride.
Vrushalee Mane thanks police department
We are proud to be first participants of this modern project started by Mrs. Meeran Borwankar. Aim set by her to bring transparency in working of Police was easily achieved. We congratulate madam and her team for erasing traditional image of police and bringing the true side in front of us.
From this project we not only gained experiences but also it instilled need for self-examination in us. We could easily see change in us this program brought in us. We experienced avoiding zigzag driving and consistency in following traffic rules after session with traffic cops. We witnessed thrill of Night Rounds as well as care taken by police at the same time.
I salute all protectors who keep us safe in all challenging and dangerous situations.
